Substance Use is a National Crisis

  • Over the past year overdoses have claimed the lives of over 100,000 Americans. 7
    • An almost 30% increase from the year before
    • Opioids were responsible for around 75% of the overdose deaths
    • Overdose deaths from methamphetamines and cocaine are also on the rise
  • Around 40.3 million U.S. adults are living with SUD
  • Drug use and overdose deaths in the U.S. have been identified as an “epidemic,” a “crisis,” and a “public health emergency.”
  • The annual costs associated with SUD, including healthcare and employment, exceed $440 billion. 8

What About in Ohio?

  • Unintentional drug poisoning is the leading cause of injury death in Ohio, surpassing motor vehicle crashes. 9

How Does Substance Use Impact the Workplace?

  • Nationally, around 8.6% of working adults have SUD. That means the likelihood is high that you have a substantial number of individuals in your own workforce either currently dealing with or with a history of SUD. 2
    • The number of employed Americans using illicit substances (15.4 million) is greater than those not in the workplace (7 million). 1
    • A national survey on drug use found as many as one in five survey respondents reported they have used marijuana recreationally at work during work hours. 2
  • Estimates for the annual cost of lost productivity in the workplace are as high as $200 billion. 13
    • The negative impact includes lost productivity, workplace accidents and injuries, absenteeism, low morale, and increased illnesses.
    • The estimated annual cost of untreated SUD in the workplace can range from $2,600 to $13,000 per employee.

Adult Protective Services

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates most cases of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation never get reported. Elder abuse victims often lack knowledge about how to seek protection from their abusers. In many cases, they may hesitate to report the crime because they are dependent on their abuser for care, and they may fear retaliation. Coleman clinicians investigate reported abuse, neglect and/or exploitation of seniors 60 and older. 

In Stark County, Coleman is a designated agency for the Department of Job and Family Services. We believe seniors have a right to be safe. We make referrals to health care organizations, social services, legal, law enforcement, housing or other services. Coleman helps secure ongoing assistance and support for older adults determined to be in need of protection. Our goal is to secure the safety of our elder community members while promoting the greatest level of independence and personal decision making possible.

Coleman Can Help with Adult & Elder Abuse 

Abuse can happen to anyone – no matter the person’s age, race, religion or gender. Elder abuse is a serious public health problem in the United States. According to the National Institute on Aging, hundreds of thousands of elder abuse cases occur each year. In fact, 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced abuse. Elder abuse is one of the most overlooked public health hazards in the United States. Victims of abuse are three times more likely than those who weren’t mistreated to die prematurely. 

Even though elder abuse does occur in nursing homes, it happens most often at home. In more than half of elder abuse and neglect cases, the perpetrator is a family member. Two-thirds of perpetrators are adult children or spouses. Elder care abuse in a home setting can be easier to disguise because there are far less checks and balances than there are in nursing homes. And seniors with dementia or other memory problems may try to speak up, but their concerns may not be taken seriously because they appear to be confused.

Elder abuse is a serious problem – it’s either a misdemeanor or a felony depending on where the crime is committed and how extreme it is. Reckless neglect is usually a misdemeanor while an act of violence against a senior may be a felony.

Signs of Abuse

Do you know a senior you suspect is in a high-risk care situation? There are a number of clues that can indicate abuse may be happening. 

Physical Abuse involves injury, unreasonable confinement, intimidation or cruel punishment with resulting physical harm, pain or mental anguish.

Warning Signs of Physical Abuse:

  • Severe bruises or burns
  • Evidence a senior has been restrained, tied up, or locked up
  • Broken bones or wounds
  • Self-endangering behavior
  • Suicidal acts
  • Poor hygiene
  • Confusion/wandering
  • Refusal of medical treatment
  • Homelessness

Emotional Abuse can involve a caregiver exhibiting controlling behavior, criticism, public humiliation, shaming, blaming, belittling, threats and manipulation toward a senior.

Warning Signs of Emotional Abuse:

  • Depression
  • Increased fear and anxiety
  • Isolation from family and friends
  • Withdrawal from normal activities
  • Unusual sleep patterns 

Neglect occurs when an adult or caregiver fails to provide necessary support or services to help a senior avoid physical harm, mental distress or mental illness. 

Warning Signs of Neglect:

  • Dehydration and unexplained weight loss
  • Malnourishment
  • Untreated medical conditions
  • Failure to take medication
  • Dirt, fleas, lice
  • Bedsores
  • Ulcerated sores
  • Fecal/urine odor

Exploitation is a caregiver’s unlawful or improper use of the senior’s resources for the caregiver’s benefit or financial gain.

Signs of Exploitation include misuse of person, funds, property, or possessions.

Elder abuse is a serious problem that can be prevented. Be sure to ask older adults gently, but directly whether they are safe at home. Ask family members whether the caregiver has ever had any problems or complaints, especially involving abuse. Many cases of elder abuse have gone unreported because no one has ever asked about the abuse directly.

Coleman’s Crisis Stabilization Units (CSU) serve people facing addiction or a mental health crisis.

Located in Allen, Stark and Portage Counties, Coleman offers multi-bed CSUs in a safe, comfortable, neighborhood setting.

Clients can stay for up to two weeks – receiving medication management, individual and group counseling, linkage to community resources, 24/7 care and monitoring.

The individual is then referred to a less restrictive outpatient service where they can continue on their treatment path and reach recovery goals.

Community Partnership

Psychiatric professionals and mental health agencies count on Coleman’s CSUs for high quality crisis services. Referrals to Coleman guarantee excellent response and responsible care. 

Likewise, first responders know that Coleman’s CSUs can offer the stabilization services that can reduce disturbances in the community.

About Coleman Health Services

The CSU is managed by Coleman Health Services, an Ohio-based behavioral health provider. 

Coleman assumed operations of the Crisis Intervention and Recovery Center (CIRC) in 2018. Under Coleman’s new leadership, they increased training for Trauma Informed Care, updated client menus, updated facilities and added more counseling services.

Case Management for Adults, Adolescents & Children

The impact of mental health challenges goes beyond just the medical symptoms. Active recovery for those with mental illness involves a wide range of integrated care, person-centered treatment and community support. Coleman offers Case Management for children, teens and adults at all stages of life. Our Case Managers are credentialed behavioral and mental health professionals experienced in helping clients and their families in the recovery journey.

How Case Management Helps

Coleman is actively working to eliminate common barriers for those dealing with mental health issues. And our Case Managers work with you to receive the best services necessary for your recovery. They act as safety nets for individuals and families dealing with mental illness – dedicated to helping clients deal with life’s daily stressors. This may include a variety of things from illness education and coping skill teaching, securing safe housing, finding or keeping a job, enrolling in educational programs and keeping up to date with doctor visits, therapy and medication. That’s what makes Case Management so important. Coleman Case Managers work with a collaborative network of therapists, school staff, community partners and other mental health professionals and primary care providers – working toward a common goal to provide holistic,  individualized, integrated care. Case Managers also promote advocacy and outreach, and they help facilitate individual and family education and training.

Who Is Case Management For?

Our Case Managers work with all Coleman clients and families experiencing mental illness. Clients who benefit from Coleman Case Management services are those who experience severe and persistent mental illness who may also be struggling financially or with homelessness. Here they receive treatment in individual and small group sessions for ongoing assessment of needs, assistance in coping skills and managing issues, medication management and developing of daily living skills.

Case Management at Coleman Health Services

At Coleman, our Case Managers take a big-picture approach – this way, we are better able to prevent gaps in care and offer a targeted treatment plan designed to meet your specific needs. Our Case Managers take time to listen to each client’s unique concerns, in order to set personal recovery goals and develop a strategy for achieving them. Then, we work closely with each client to address their individual concerns and coordinate a client-focused plan of care with our integrated healthcare team.

A crisis occurs when a stressful life event overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope effectively in the face of a perceived challenge or threat.

Crises occur at the spur of the moment and in a variety of settings as trauma can arise quickly. Crises are temporary, although the effects may become long lasting. See our 24/7 Crisis Hotline & Walk-in Services.

Crisis intervention is the emergency and temporary care given to an individual who, because of unusual stress in life, is unable to function or cope as he or she normally would.

Our goal at Coleman is to interrupt the downward spiral of negative thinking and to increase stabilization.

Crisis assessment and crisis intervention strategies focus on the client’s immediate situation including factors such as safety and immediate needs.

In addition to our Walk-in Clinic Services, Coleman offers 24/7 Crisis Support (including an Opiate Hotline and National Suicide Lifeline) and a Mobile Response Program for children, teens and adults in distress.

A crisis can happen any time, anywhere. Coleman Health Services’ Mobile Response

Adult & Youth programs rapidly deploy culturally-competent, trauma-informed on-site crisis support using behavioral health interventions that are sensitive to the age-specific youth and adults.

 

The Mobile Response Team is comprised of professionals trained in crisis intervention, information and referral. The team provides mobile behavioral health services to individuals in the home, at school, workplace and in various other community settings.

 

When can I call? When can the Mobile Response Team be deployed?

Anytime. Available 24 hours every day, including weekends and holidays. 

 

Who can call the Mobile Response hotline? 

Anyone. 

 

Co-workers, friends, family members, caregivers, school staff and professionals can call for the Mobile Response Team based on their need of urgent intervention. All situations are considered valid.

More than 300 people in Stark County have overdosed from opioids, including heroin, since 2012 according to the Stark County Coroner’s office. In addition, Ohio experienced the second highest number of drug overdose deaths nationwide in 2014, a number that is soaring according to a federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report.

Our mission is to help change the destiny of our youth and adults by helping find meaningful employment. And our program works to connect our adults and youth clients with the right positions among our local employers.

At Coleman, our Employment Services Program works with our clients right where they’re at in their own lives – to address their immediate issues and concerns. Then, we tailor a personalized action plan, with achievable goals. This is an approach that has helped our clients overcome the impact of illness and disability and has worked to support many successful careers.

What is evaluation and diagnostic assessment?

This process consists of gathering information to assess an individual’s behavioral health needs. This helps clinicians determine the best service mix of mental health, addiction, and/or employment and vocational rehabilitation services to assist in recovery.

 

A diagnostic assessment is a clinical evaluation provided by a licensed professional in order to gather information to determine appropriate treatment based on the initial problem, current mental status and the diagnostic impression. The clinician will share the results of the diagnostic assessment with you in order to begin treatment planning.

 

Common referrals for diagnostic assessment include:

  • Depression treatment
  • Grief counseling
  • Substance abuse treatment
  • Post-traumatic stress treatment
  • Mental health counseling
  • Anger management counseling
  • Anxiety treatment
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Child counseling

 

How does Coleman evaluate and diagnose?

To receive a diagnostic assessment at Coleman, please bring photo identification and insurance card. Sliding fee options apply to those without insurance. Arrive a half-hour prior to your scheduled appointment in order to complete health questionnaire and financial intake.

 

When seeking a diagnostic assessment at Coleman Behavioral Health, expect to discuss the following with the clinician:

Guardianship Services

Coleman advocates for adults and seniors who are unable to make necessary decisions to protect themselves. Court appointed legal guardians, trained Coleman staff, ensure that vulnerable adults are provided with food, shelter, medical care, legal services and other basic needs to support their health, safety and comfort.

What Is Guardianship?

Guardianship is a legal relationship in which the guardian is given the authority by the court to make decisions on behalf of a person (ward) who is unable to make and/or communicate decisions on their own. A guardian is the person appointed by the court to make decisions on behalf of someone else. Judges and court magistrates supervise the guardians. Also known as elder conservatorship, guardianship provides an individual the legal authority to make decisions for a vulnerable adult or senior. In this legal relationship, the guardian is entrusted with the care and welfare of the protected person, or ward—helping assure bills are paid and making personal and medical decisions for the individual protected by guardianship.

Why Are Guardians Appointed?

When older adults are unable to care or advocate for themselves, a guardianship may become necessary. Legal guardianship assures care and advocacy for adults and seniors in need. For adults who are unable to manage their personal affairs, guardians are appointed by a Probate Court. In the case of senior citizens, they may be incapable of caring for themselves or make appropriate decisions regarding their own welfare due cognitive impairment like dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or disabilities. Problems arise when seniors may no longer be able to remember to take important medications, manage daily hygiene, or handle their finances. This is when guardianship is often the best strategy to help assure the health, safety, and a measure of independence.

A typical case might be when an individual with a diagnosis of dementia or developmental disability, struggles with homelessness, or requires medical or mental health treatment and are unable to consent for the support and services they need. In these circumstances, Coleman would assess the case, then file the case in the Probate Court. A Probate Court judge would make the final determination as to whether an individual would be deemed incompetent – in which case, that individual would be assigned to a guardian.

General Powers and Duties of a Guardian

While guardians assure the basic needs of the ward are met, they don’t provide hands-on or live-in caregiving; however they do help make important decisions regarding this type of care. They also advocate for individuals who can no longer make decisions for themselves. A guardian is able to consent for treatment, coordinate housing and other care options, and serve as an overall coordinator of care. Under guardianship, Coleman clients experience better outcomes and increased stability due to our services.   

Guardians are also required to file either annual or biannual reports about where the protected person lives, the services that the protected person receives, the protected person’s physical and mental condition. This enables the court to supervise and monitor the condition of the ward, and to determine whether guardianship needs to continue.

Coleman Guardianship Services

At Coleman, our goal is to improve the quality of life for all those we serve – providing stability and care that can change the destiny for vulnerable populations and foster recovery.  

Coleman Guardianship Services works to advocate for vulnerable clients to ensure they receive proper care. Services include essential services required to promote healthy living:

  • Petition the court for guardianship services
  • Assess of necessary services by a case manager
  • Case management
  • Arrange support services
  • Oversee living arrangements
  • Make informed medical decisions
  • Mandatory reporting

Once a client stabilizes and makes progress, we begin to work with them to have the guardianship removed and support clients with programs and services that promote greater independence.  While this may not be possible for every client, we continue to work with all clients to help them  achieve their personal goals in treatment.

Residential Placement

Stable housing is critical to the recovery process. Coleman helps individuals find temporary and permanent housing to foster independence and build critical skills.

 

Supportive Living

 

Coleman recognizes the direct correlation between housing and wellness. We offer specialized residential group living living design to help people integrate back into everyday life that supports their recovery and provides them a platform of strength on their journey from homelessness.

 

People who benefit from these services come to us from situations that include:

  • Emergency shelters
  • Domestic violence shelters
  • The streets
  • Transitional housing programs for homeleness

 

They often have experienced years of trauma, substance use, abuse and sometimes incarceration.

 

Our group home programs provides the wellness attention with behavioral health clinicians and nurses – as well as the structure of skills learning, chore responsibilities and ongoing therapy. 

 

As dignity is restored, Coleman professionals continue to help clients build upon their progress toward independence with job training, housing assistance and more. 

 

Transitional Aged Youth Apartments

 

Coleman’s youth transitional services assist youth and young adults with emotional and/or behavioral difficulties in their transition to adulthood. 

 

A team of case managers, counselors, a child psychiatrist and vocational rehabilitation providers are specialized in providing services to transitional age youth. They collaborate to help clients achieve greater self-sufficiency through housing support (single unit apartments and housing placement), vocational and employment services, and social/professional skill building. 

 

Apartments

Coleman designed and built two facilities for transition-age youth. They offer stability to young adults ages 18-26 who have been homeless and diagnosed with mental illness or a co-occuring disability. Residents learn daily living activities including cooking, cleaning, leisure and money management, as well as social and communication skills. A house monitor lives onsite to provide support for residents. 

 

Transition to Independence Process (TIP)

The team utilizes the Transition to Independence Process (TIP) to help youth and their families improve their lives during this transition and beyond. The participants receive:

 

  • Vocational assessment, job development and job placement
  • Support and skill building in daily living activities
  • Mentoring and coaching in the areas of self-determination
  • Mentoring in being good citizens and self-advocations
  • Psychiatry, counseling and 24/7 Coleman Access Services
