KENT, OHIO August 6, 2021 – Coleman Professional Services, a nonprofit provider of behavioral healthcare and rehabilitation services, is now Coleman Health Services. The new name better reflects the organization’s focus on whole-person treatment.

“The name ‘Coleman Professional Services’ no longer represents the continuous changes in our behavioral health field,” Nelson Burns, president and CEO, said. “We now can expand our services to meet the holistic nature of healthcare; we provide more integrated health services than ever before.”

Burns, who is retiring after 36 years of service, noted that the mission of Coleman has not changed – to improve the lives of people it serves regardless of their ability to pay, by delivering mental health, substance use, residential, and rehabilitation services. Coleman has recently been designated a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) in a number of the counties where it provides services.  As a CCBHC, Coleman will also have primary care offered at those locations.

Hattie Tracy, Coleman’s new President and CEO, enthusiastically endorses the new name and logo. “Now that Coleman is offering expanded services to treat our clients’ behavioral health and physical health needs, the new name will better represent Coleman and all that we do in the counties that we serve.” She added, “The logo is great because it represents our clients in the center surrounded by Coleman’s seven values.”

Coleman started in 1978 in Portage County as the Kevin Coleman Center. In 1996 the name was changed to Coleman Professional Services and the organization began to grow beyond Portage County. Coleman now provides services in 22 Ohio counties, from the western border to the eastern border.

Services provided by Coleman in addition to behavioral health include employment, residential, and various social services.  Coleman operates four enterprise businesses to help provide funding for Coleman’s award-winning services. For more information, visit ColemanServices.org.

April marks Counseling Awareness Month, a time to honor mental health, substance abuse, and school counselors.

We recognize and appreciate our dedicated Coleman professionals that are working tirelessly in an environment of unprecedented unemployment, uncertainty, and stress.

In this turbulent time of COVID-19, seeking counseling is a proactive way to manage your problems, whether it’s the loss of a job, shifting to working from home, or dealing effectively with other family members that are generally not in your home 24/7.

Counseling can help you develop new skills and put together a plan to cope with whatever life experiences have come your way. Professional counselors assist in bringing you back to a state of restfulness and balance.

Counseling is a safe place to express any feelings you may have difficulty sharing with your employer, family members, and friends. Counseling can touch you at any point in your lifespan from childhood through your senior years.

The infographic below represents the number/type of counselors in the United States and the percentage of individuals who have sought counseling.

This month, we embrace a new decade honoring social workers of all ages by embarking on a campaign to inform the public, policymakers, and legislators about the way social workers help their clients every day.

Not sure what social workers do? Please watch this brief video from the National Association of Social Workers to learn more.

Social Work is a Growing Profession

Currently, there are over 700,000 individuals employed in the social work field and that number is expected to grow by eleven percent in the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

You will find social workers in almost every element of our society. They are in:

  • Schools, helping students deal with trauma, bullying, and the opioid crisis. They also protect children who’ve been neglected or mistreated.
  • Veterans Centers
  • Hospitals
  • Adoption Agencies
  • Mental Health Facilities, helping individuals on their path to recovery
  • Corporations

In general, social workers strive to make our lives better – whether it has been to lobby for better access to mental health care, the implementation of Social Security, and even the enactment of the minimum wage.

This infographic highlights the role of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Workers.

Meet Denise Smith, Our Social Worker Extraordinaire

Denise joined the Jefferson County Coleman Professional Services business unit in 2015 as a part-time Outpatient Therapist. From the start, the staff at Coleman were impressed with her administrative skills, such as program monitoring and supporting our compliance of standards.

Denise was successful in assisting Coleman’s clients in moving toward their recovery success. She helped her peers with their caseload organization and worked on-call. As a result of her hard work, she was promoted to a full-time Director, overseeing our Community Psychiatric Support Treatment (CPST), a case management program for children and adolescents and Access, our 24/7 support service for those experiencing a mental health emergency.

In 2020, she’s implementing an Access Clinic at Gill House, coaching her employees and helping them to grow professionally, and serving as a leader in the development of our new Jefferson County Crisis Stabilization Unit.
