KENT, OHIO August 6, 2021 – Coleman Professional Services, a nonprofit provider of behavioral healthcare and rehabilitation services, is now Coleman Health Services. The new name better reflects the organization’s focus on whole-person treatment.

“The name ‘Coleman Professional Services’ no longer represents the continuous changes in our behavioral health field,” Nelson Burns, president and CEO, said. “We now can expand our services to meet the holistic nature of healthcare; we provide more integrated health services than ever before.”

Burns, who is retiring after 36 years of service, noted that the mission of Coleman has not changed – to improve the lives of people it serves regardless of their ability to pay, by delivering mental health, substance use, residential, and rehabilitation services. Coleman has recently been designated a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) in a number of the counties where it provides services.  As a CCBHC, Coleman will also have primary care offered at those locations.

Hattie Tracy, Coleman’s new President and CEO, enthusiastically endorses the new name and logo. “Now that Coleman is offering expanded services to treat our clients’ behavioral health and physical health needs, the new name will better represent Coleman and all that we do in the counties that we serve.” She added, “The logo is great because it represents our clients in the center surrounded by Coleman’s seven values.”

Coleman started in 1978 in Portage County as the Kevin Coleman Center. In 1996 the name was changed to Coleman Professional Services and the organization began to grow beyond Portage County. Coleman now provides services in 22 Ohio counties, from the western border to the eastern border.

Services provided by Coleman in addition to behavioral health include employment, residential, and various social services.  Coleman operates four enterprise businesses to help provide funding for Coleman’s award-winning services. For more information, visit ColemanServices.org.

New Format Allows Supporters from Near and Far to Participate in Event

KENT, OH, September 14, 2020 – This year’s Right at Home Fundraiser, to support Coleman Professional Services, will be unlike any event the organization has held before: it will be entirely virtual. The virtual format will enable anyone who is passionate about supporting mental health services in their community to attend the auction and make a difference.

“We’re excited about this new virtual format,” said Coleman Professional Services CEO Nelson Burns. “Access to our services is more important than ever and funds raised from this event help Coleman continue to foster recovery, build independence and change the lives of the clients we serve.”

This year’s event will feature a FREE, week-long auction from September 17th to September 24th, during which participants may bid on a variety of items, including unique artwork, jewelry, prize baskets, and distinct experiences. A live, wrap-up celebration will take place at 7pm on September 24th hosted by WKSU radio personality, Mark Pennell.

Event Highlights

“This year, we have an eclectic mix of fabulous pieces from local artists and one-of-a-kind trips and experiences that will have broad appeal,” said Right at Home Committee Chair Stephanie Fowler.

Among the art that’s up for bidding is a drawing by the late Jance Lentz, a longtime friend of Coleman; a mixed media canvas by local legend, Robert Wood; and a framed giclee print by local award-winning artist, Tom Jackson.

In addition to these special pieces, exclusive experiences are also included in the auction. Most notably are two, seven-night stays at private oceanfront villas in Manzanillo, Mexico, where the winning bidders can enjoy a private beach, jet skiing, zip lining, snorkeling, and much more! Another exceptional experience is a half-day sporting clay session for three at the exclusive Hill N Dale Club.

Other items, such as raffle tickets, will be available for purchase prior to the event. Prices range from $20 apiece for the ever-popular Wall of Wine tickets to $25 for a “Stock the Bar” Basket. A beautiful oil painting by Ben Basham will also be raffled off for $50 per ticket.

All funds raised from Right at Home will support Coleman Professional Services.

While the Right at Home auction is free, bidders must register. To register, donate or learn more, visit ColemanServices.org/RAH2020.

Did you know?

  • That the IRS considers online donations for 2019 to be right up until 11:59 pm on December 31?
  • If you mail a check to a charity, it counts for 2019 if it’s postmarked on or before December 31?
  • 31% of all annual giving occurs in December?
  • 12% of all giving happens in the last three days of the year?

So no, it isn’t too late to give to Coleman Professional Services, an IRC 501©(3) designated charity, and your other favorite charities!

Giving Does Good

A recent article in Psychology Today included a comprehensive review of more than 500 studies on why people give conducted by researchers at the University of Notre Dame drew some interesting conclusions. Giving is more common among people who are religious, have higher levels of education, own a home, are married and live in smaller towns. People are also more likely to give when they understand the need they are fulfilling and when they can relate to the cause they are supporting.

And, as a bonus, it turns out there is solid evidence that givers experience benefits themselves.

Another study funded by the Women’s Philanthropy Institute found that giving is positively related to life satisfaction, and the more people give (as a percentage of their household income) the more satisfaction they feel. A 2008 study conducted by researchers from Harvard and the University of British Columbia found that spending money on others leads to lasting improvements in people’s overall happiness.

A longitudinal study by researchers at the University of Buffalo found that people who engaged in helping behaviors with their neighbors and friends, such as running errands, cooking meals, or providing child care, reduced their mortality rates compared with those who did not help.

And a 2007 study published in the journal Science found donating to a charity activates neural activity in areas of the brain that are linked to reward processing – the same areas that are activated by pleasures like eating and sex.

As 2019 comes to a close we hope you think about finding a way to share some of what you have with others. The bottom line is that giving provides as many benefits to the giver as to the recipient.

Thank you for your continued support of Coleman Professional Services. Wishing you and yours have all the best in 2020!
