An Open Letter from Coleman Professional Services from Nelson Burns, President & CEO: COVID-19 Update

Mar 30, 2020 | News

During these uncertain times, I want to let you know that, as an essential business, Coleman is following all CDC requirements to remain open and accessible to our clients and the communities we serve.

I am so grateful to the dedication of our staff, many now working remotely, providing virtual telehealth appointments to our clients by telephone, FaceTime, Microsoft TEAMS or other platforms. Our walk-in clinics are now Call-In Clinics. Our complete focus is on client care while keeping our providers safe.

Many of our clients are those least able to navigate this new normal without support – the profoundly mentally ill, recovering addicts and the homeless – while those suddenly under financial, emotional and physical stress will need our services more than ever!

What Coleman is doing:

  • Social distancing is really physical distancing. During stressful times it is more important than ever to stay socially connected. Coleman’s mental health professionals play a vital role in social connectedness.
  • Staff are checking in more frequently with clients, asking questions about self-harm ideation, plan and intent, talking about relapse from drugs and alcohol and supporting sobriety.
  • We are restricting visitors from our residential houses and crisis stabilization units.
  • We take the temperatures of staff, clients and visitors daily.
  • Our focus remains on ensuring our client’s recovery is supported during this challenging time.

What you can do to help:

  • Practice self-care during, not only during times of crisis but under normal circumstances, as well.
  • Check up on each other – If you must head out for essentials like groceries, take-out food or prescriptions, check with a few close neighbors and see if you can save them a trip.
  • Stay informed and positive, get your news from reliable and credible sources such as https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/covid-19/
  • Get outside and enjoy nature – even if you are avoiding crowds. Take a walk and get some fresh air.
  • Stay in the present and focus on what you can control, like washing hands and reminding others to wash theirs.
  • Stay connected to others, even as you maintain social distance.
  • Simple expressions of gratitude and appreciation, especially for our front line safety and health care professionals, would be gratefully appreciated. Share this letter. Post good news via social media. Keep a written journal and share those stories too.
  • Reach out to us if you need support.

If you have the means and want to help with a monetary donation, we need your help now more than ever. Many of you typically wait until the end of the calendar year to make your donations. Please consider making that donation now, and maybe even increasing it, ensuring everyone has access to quality care, regardless of their ability to pay. Coleman accepts outright cash gifts, gifts of stock, IRA distributions and other deferred gift vehicles. Please consider redirecting some or all of the funds that may be coming your way from the government. Your generosity will be gratefully acknowledged, recognized and receipted as a charitable gift for income tax purposes.

With Gratitude,

Nelson Burns
